Pedestrian Safety

In 1999, traffic accidents claimed the lives of over 500 pedestrians ages 5 through 18 and injured another 29,000.

Parents can prepare their children to be "safe pedestrians" by taking walks with them when they are young and providing verbal instruction and by always setting an example. Remind older children of safety measures often... even if your child scoffs, they will know it's a message of love and value.

Rules For Pedestrians:

  1. Always walk on the sidewalk. WALKING IN THE ROAD IS ALWAYS DANGEROUS! But if there is no sidewalk and you must walk in the road, always walk FACING traffic, so you can see any car that might go out of control.
  2. Dress to be seen. Brightly colored clothing makes it easier for drivers to see you during the daytime.  At night, you need to wear special reflective material on your shoes, cap or jacket to reflect the headlights of cars coming towards you.

The Safety First initiative is above and beyond regular school budgeting. Businesses and individuals can help defer costs by becoming Community Partners.
