Waverly Community Schools Celebrate Diversity Week

May 2 through May 6, 2005 students, staff and community celebrate and honor the values, traditions and customs of others.
 
All seven schools in the Waverly Community Schools will celebrate the week of May 2-6, 2005 with activities focusing on promoting an environment to increase awareness, sensitivity, and respect for diversity in its many forms. The week will spotlight some of the diversity activities that occur in our schools throughout the year.
 
Diversity Celebration Events and Activities
May 2 - 6 -- High School -- Grade level identification competition of the common area flags, diverse displays, music and lunch themes of cultures/ethnics.
 
May 2 - 6 -- Middle School -- Lunch themes of culture/ethnic food and a spotlight of diverse activities that occur throughout the year.
 
May 2-6 -- Colt Elementary -- The Colt Kids will be involved in diversity activities that have been planned by their teachers. Some of these activities include: making a diversity quilt, parents coming to visit and reading about different families, self-portraits using construction paper of different skin tones, ethnic food, handicapp awareness, adoptive families, Flat Stanley, MHM lessons, research and making country flags, and a school-wide assembly for the Colt Chorale to peform folksongs and tales fram various countries.
 
May 2-6 -- View Elementary -- Teachers will, as they do throughout the school year, incorporate diversity activities in its many forms in the classrooms, playground and other areas of the building during this week.
 
May 3 -- Winans Elementary -- Diversity Fair, 6:00 pm, in Winans Gym. Anyone is welcomed to attend.
 
May 5 -- East Intermediate -- Ballet Folklorico come to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, 8:45 am.
 
May 5 -- Elmwood Elementary -- World Heritage Map to be displayed at the Arts and Academic Fair, 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Starting the week the goal is to have students mark their family's heritage on the world map and throughout the week teach about the "melting pot" concept and the contributions of immigrants to our country.
 
Strategic Plan Strategy #3: Diversity -- We will develop and implement plans to capitalize on the benefits of diversity to better achieve our mission and objectives.
