What's New at Waverly?

06/25/2007
This year we will have the KAP (Kindergarten Activities Program) program which gives our kindergarten students a full day experience.  In addition Waverly has adopted a K-4 World Language Program for all students.  Students in grades K-4 will experience Spanish for the first time this fall.

Learning a World Language as a child means the ability to “sponge up” language in a natural way- just like all of us learned to talk.  When Waverly students enter Spanish class, they’ll be entering a world where the teacher speaks only Spanish. “To an adult, it sounds impossible, but that’s exactly the way they learn!” says teacher Michelle Frederick.  “Just like when we were babies, young students learn to understand the language first, and then later to produce language on their own.  Ages zero through about ten are the best years for a student to learn a language.  The new Michigan Merit Curriculum has given us the perfect opportunity to start our students early in languages.  Waverly is on the forefront of research, providing students with optimum learning in a World Language with this program.”  Students will learn through songs, projects, games and activities designed to be fun and educational.  The program will grow with this fall’s fourth graders, who will continue their study of Spanish through the eighth grade.  Waverly High School will continue to offer Spanish, French and German as electives in the 9th though 12th grades.
