WEF Gala Honors Jeanne Doren

Jeanne Doren was honored at the December 2 Waverly Education Foundation (WEF) 2004 Gala Evening for her tireless volunteer work in the Waverly Community Schools. Jeanne is a very active member of the WEF, and committed supporter of the district.

The Waverly Education Foundation established an annual recognition named in honor of Bob Hubbell. The Hubbell Distinguished Service Award is presented annually at the Gala Evening. Bob Hubbell and Mike Curley are the previous honorees.

The Waverly Education Foundation reaches out and touches more lives than people may realize. Their mission statement is: To enhance and provide educational opportunities to the Waverly Community School District through community and business partnerships.

This organization is composed of private individuals who donate their money to achieve the Foundation's mission. Their donations, in turn, are donated to about ten organizations and individuals throughout the district per year, which ask for the help and pass the Foundation's guidelines.

The guidelines are rather simple. They state that the applicants must affect the school system as a whole and that the affect must be enduring. When the Foundation has to turn away applicants due to the guidelines, they do exhort individuals to help out. "The Foundation feels bad but it doesn't drop it," stated Dan Pappas.

"I think they have done a great job to provide seed money for people," commented Roger LaPratt about the Waverly Education Foundation. From the elementary schools to the high school, the Foundation has provided seed money. In 2000, the Foundation granted $2,000 to Mr. Henderson for musical instruments for Elmwood and Windemere View. They provided $300 to East Intermediate School to start up a school-managed store.

The high school has benefited greatly from the donations of the Waverly Education Foundation. The marching band received $1,000 for new uniforms in 1999. Women's lacrosse was granted $500 to help pay for their uniforms during their very first season in 2000. Few people know that the Waverly Education Foundation was responsible for these donations and many more.

Thank you to all of the people involved in the Waverly Education Foundation. Your help is truly appreciated!
