Hockey Team Brings a Little Bit of Home to Army Unit 03/01/2005 Last November the Grand Ledge -Waverly Varsity Ice Hockey Team partnered with the Army Aviation Support Facility in Grand Ledge to produce its 2nd annual poster/schedule entitled " Grand Ledge-Waverly Hockey, Rising to the Challenge". The poster pictured the team posed in front of one of the Army Aviation Support Facilities, Black Hawk Helicopters. The poster is funded thru donations from the area business community. It is given away at selected varsity hockey games during the season, as well as at the team's monthly community service projects. The poster is also displayed in area businesss in the Grand Ledge and Waverly Community Schools to increase the awareness & support of High School Ice Hockey for both schools. The (Grand Ledge-Waverly, Hockey Team) is a combination team made up of athletes from both Grand Ledge & Waverly High Schools. It is a varsity sport at both schools. They are part of the Capital Area Activities Conference. The team plays their games at the Summit at the Capital Centre located near I69 & I 96.
Shortly after the photo for the poster was taken, 115 members of F-Co from Army Aviation Support Facility were activated for service in Iraq. The team decided to show support for the local unit by putting red, white & blue ribbon stickers on their hockey helmets for the season. After training at Fort McCoy Wisconsin, the unit arrived in Iraq in early February. Since then, the team has been busy gathering "pieces of home" to send to the unit during their stay.
These Include 75 of the teams poster/ schedules, 115 letters that team members have written to members of the unit, copies of their hockey program given out at home hockey games & copies of the Delta Waverly News / Grand Ledge Independent containing articles on the team & the poster. The team also included DVD copies of a recent game played against Dewitt-St Johns. The game was announced by Eric Peasley who does play by play for Michigan State Hockey. Mr Peasleys children graduated from Waverly High School. The DVDs were produced by students from the Waverly Media Center. It is the sincere hope of the Grand Ledge-Waverly Varsity Hockey Team that these articles bring a little bit of home to the soldiers when they are away from their families serving their country.
