Special Constitution Celebrations Planned for Friday, September 16th

Waverly Community Schools are observing Constitution Day, Saturday, September 17th with many educational activities planned for Friday, September 16th.

Windemere View Elementary staff and students will attend an assembly on Friday, September 16th at 2:30. All are encouraged to wear red, white and blue for the assembly. At the assembly seven teachers will perform a reader’s theater with another teacher doing a music activity with the students. Teachers are also showing a movie about the Constitution and having class discussions.

Winans Elementary teachers are using lesson plans on the Preamble, authority and patriotism; showing the video “This is your Life Charlie Brown: The Birth of the Constitution”; holding elections for classroom activities; encouraging everyone to wear red, white, and blue; and have music reflecting the Constitution.

Elmwood is conducting mini Constitution lessons delivered by Mrs. Gloria Gonzalez, Principal, and Pledge with emphasis on founding fathers role with Pledge and Constitution. Constitution Week is highlighted on the school message board, through music lessons and a showcase display.

Colt Elementary has Constitution Week posted on the school sign and during morning announcements on Friday, September 16, Dr. Peggy Baldwin, Colt Principal will talk about the Constitution and relate it to rules at Colt.  Colt students have a song about the constitution sung to the tune of Oh, My Darlin' Clementine.  Students and staff will wear red, white and blue.  Teachers have lesson plans about the constitution with book readings and videos.

East Intermediate has been covering: 1. the Core Democratic Values through daily classroom messages from our Words of Wisdom Program. 2.At our Open House, Valerie Hendrickson-Carr, Principal read the East Mission (like the constitution, but for our school) and invited parents and the school community to help us achieve it. 3. We are posting our Mission, the core democratic values and a flow chart about how we can all be successful this year in each classroom. 4. We have the Detroit Free press poster that we will display(regarding the constitution). 5. Friday, I will invite everyone to join us outside to pledge the flag together (hopefully, all will come).  6. As we have raised $ for Katrina victums, I have stressed the community response to disasters. We have raised almost $1000! 7. We use the lifelong guidelines and lifeskills, our East democratic values and will begin the Hall of Heros program on Sept. 26. 8. All of steps 1-7 came out of our first Social Studies SIT meeting. We are doing all we can to bring history to life for our students! 9. We will continue to review constitution materials, activities, articles, etc. through school improvement.

The Middle School is conducting a week long trivia contest about the Constitution. English classes will concentrate on the amendments. History classes will be discussing the importance of the Constitution. Part of the Constitution will be read on the announcements each day and the school will have a Constitution display.

Waverly High School will incorporate Constitution Day with various activities in social studies classes.
