Superintendent's Letter to all Elementary Parents, February 5, 2010 02/05/2010 February 5, 2010
Dear Parent,
By now, you are probably aware that on Monday, January 25, 2010, the board of education received a proposal from the chairperson of the Facility Review Committee that Elmwood Elementary and Windemere View Elementary close at the end of the 2009/2010 school year. Students from both schools will be assigned to Colt Elementary and Winans Elementary.
The Facility Review Committee, made up of parents and citizens, and led by a citizen leader, conducted an extensive study of all Waverly facilities, except the bus service facility, from August 2009 through January 2010.
The proposal also recommended that fourth grade students be assigned to East Intermediate beginning with the 2010/2011 school year. If the board of education adopts the proposal as recommended, then current third and fourth grade students in all Waverly elementary schools will be begin classes next fall at East Intermediate. The school will be transformed from a fifth / sixth grade configuration to a fourth / fifth / sixth grade configuration.
East Intermediate is a fine school. It has quality administrators, an excellent teaching staff and a great support staff. It features a solid academic program and is a safe, clean and spacious place for teaching and learning.
The board of education directed the administration to report on the feasibility of the entire proposal at a public meeting on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the Waverly High School auditorium.
The board of education will host a public forum on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the Waverly High School auditorium.
We understand that assigning fourth grade students to a different school is difficult and emotional for those involved. If the board decides to close Elmwood and Windemere View Elementary Schools and transition the fourth grade students to East Intermediate, then we are committed to making those changes positive for your child and family.
