FRESHMAN FOCUS

Our priority in this class is to ensure a successful 9th grade year for our students, both academically and socially. We find that many freshmen do not advocate for themselves regarding grades and problems they may be encountering until it is too late for them to recover their grades. Our curriculum is one that is in place in several schools around the country, and is positively impacting student achievement. We have a "first day" letter that went home with students that lists the names of the units, however this list may give you a better idea of the content.

Topics taught / discussed:

Tolerance
Diversity
Problem solving
Dealing with conflict
Exam preparation
One on One grade consultations (weekly)
Assistance in core class homework
Anti-Bullying
Motivational speakers
Intramural games (teamwork)
Communication skills
Public speaking skills
Leadership
Citizenship
Responsibility
Time management
Intra-Interpersonal skill building
Sense of pride and belonging to Waverly

Our goal is for incoming freshmen to establish a relationship with their teachers that enhances their experience in a new bigger school. There are many freedoms at the high school, and we want to help them make good choices for themselves. We believe it is critical to give them a positive, productive first year in high school, and their subsequent years will go smoother as well. It is a "Credit" "No Credit" class, that requires some assignments, and lots of class participation.
