Waverly Middle School Approved for School Improvement Grant

06/01/2011

On May 31, the Michigan Department of Education informed the Waverly Community Schools that Waverly Middle School will receive a school improvement grant for the 2011-12 school year. The grant is valued at $1,467,412.

In the summer of 2010, Waverly Middle School was identified by the Michigan State Department of Education as a persistently lowest performing school. Based on Waverly Middle School being identified as a low performing school, the district submitted a school improvement grant proposal in February 2011 using the Department of Education guidelines.

The grant dollars will be used for a variety of staffing areas, professional development, and technology purchases. Some of the highlights include: adding a reading, math, behavior, and data specialist, adding two Response to Intervention (RTI) coaches; offering workshops for parents; 16 sets of video projectors, flip cameras, clickers, document cameras, mobile slates, and scanners; a summer academy; and additional instructional time added to the school day.

Waverly Middle School Principal Mike Moreno says, "This grant represents an opportunity to bring additional resources in the middle school. This is a significant investment in the areas of math, reading, technology, professional development and a host of additional academic services for the students."

This grant would not have been awarded without the partnership of the Waverly Board of Education and the Waverly bargaining units: WEA and WESPA. Their cooperation was imperative to receive consideration for school improvement funding.

Superintendent Dr. Jones comments, "The Waverly Middle School staff met the challenge of providing a quality education to middle school students this year without financial resources. To receive this grant to continue the efforts will only enhance our program."
